want to experience a little garden magic right from your kitchen?
With this super simple project, you'll learn how to regrow romaine lettuce from the grocery store.
Here's what you'll need:
1. One head of romaine lettuce
2. A small coffee mug
3. Water
4. Knife
Directions
One: Using a sharp knife, cut 2 inches from the bottom of the romaine; reserve leaves for eating.
Two: Add enough water to the coffee mug to just cover the base of the plant.
Three: Place romaine bottom in the mug. The top of the romaine should be about even with the rim of the mug.
Four: Place the mug in a windowsill.
Five: Watch the magic happen.

Sign Up for Salad School
Salad School is the four-module course that teaches you all you need to know to set up, plant, and grow your own salad garden
Believe it or not, within a few days, if you've got some magic, you'll start to see some growth. Every few days, you'll notice more and more growth. You'll be amazed at the amount of growth it has in the first two weeks.
While regrowing romaine like this is magical, it won't feed you for life, unless you don't eat very much lettuce. But what it does do is teaches us three great things about lettuce plants.
this fun project teaches us three things about romaine lettuce

Lettuce Plants Grow Quickly
Think about how quickly this torn down, ripped apart romaine regrew. Within a few days, new leaves started to form and grow taller and taller each day.

Lettuce Plants Don't Need a Lot of Space
This romaine regrew in a small coffee mug. Now imagine how little space it will take up in your garden. They are only going to need three to four inches max. This means in one square foot, a twelve inch by twelve inch square, you could fit at least nine lettuce plants. Nine. In one square foot!

You Can Harvest Them Again and Again
This is one of my favorite reasons for growing lettuces and leafy greens. The harvests never stop. You start by harvesting the outer leaves as needed. The plant will continue growing from the center, its heart, and will keep giving and giving and giving.
Lettuces are one of the best plants to start off with in the kitchen garden. They grow quickly, don't take up a lot of space, and provide harvests again and again. Get the step by step for this fun project and be inspired to grow some of your own romaine this spring.
